Digital and Marketing Literacy- Position Paper III

The meaning of digital literacy is beyond what we may know or think. The educational definition of digital literacy is having the skills you need to live, learn, and work in a society where communication and access is information is increasingly through digital technologies referring to internet platforms, social media, and mobile devices. There are many definitions and examples of digital literacy, but as a media analyst, I would like to focus on the definition I've shared previously in this context. Media literacy however could be compared, contrasted with digital literacy when it comes to educational terms and definitions. Media literacy is defined as the ability to access, analyze, and evaluate and create media in various forms.

‘Why is digital and media literacy important?' is an ongoing question from mass communication majors and even college students, in general, may be curious too and may ask. According to research, the essentialness of digital literacy is rated to be very high. Both digital and media literacy are important because it allows analysts to determine whether a specific type of form of media is credible. It helps identify different perspectives as well as helps others share them. Digital and media literacy includes asking questions as well as sharing one's perspective and opinion relating to topics of their interest. Both improve the knowledge of media.

We can help improve media knowledge by facing new challenges that the media brings, as well as researching for issues that may reside in the media. Networking is important as well to improve media knowledge. Many forms of media can be improved. The more that the media improves the more people will trust the media. We encounter many forms of media daily, so of course, there is a lot that can be improved. As a millennial and media analyst, I notice how the media can be a bit difficult to manage or adjust for some people, particularly people who are in their early 50s and above.

As the only media expert in my household, I often find myself helping my parents learn how to navigate and work with certain apps that are solely connected to the media. My mother and father have a daily question on how to work cash app, Facebook, and Google, which brings me to the question how can we improve the media for those who are still learning the media, learning the media aligned with technology? Is improving the media and the many forms it comes with easier or harder than we think? The good thing is that it makes us become critical thinkers. Apart from us knowing what we are looking at in the media leads us to the content that produced it.

As critical thinkers for the media, we may ask questions like 'Does the content have a political purpose?', 'How is this form of content essential to the media?', 'How can I learn from this media aspect?', 'How can I help others with this form of media?'. We should also consider whether the content is believable or not. A major part of understanding content from the media is understanding the sources that may be cited. Are the sources aligned with a good form of evidence? It's all about paying attention and thinking correctly, critically when it comes to the media.

According to research, millennials are consumed and influenced by other millennials. Millennials are also inspired by the media, including social media more than the generations that were before them. The younger generation is impacted by social media influencers and platforms that have a high percentage of popularity and followers. Millennials are now labeled as the generation that uses digital and social media the most. The media usage habits of millennials are at an all-time high. It can be a negative and positive thing that millennials use digital and social media as their main source of information.

I believe that millennials use digital technology and digital media to their advantage due to what it has to offer. Digital technology offers the basics of connectivity as we all know. Digital media also offers the opportunity for individuals to interact economically and socially as well as culturally and politically. Digital media makes it more convenient and easier to connect with people across the globe as well as branding and networking. Digital media with the help of apps, websites, and software has created the benefit to work and connect with others remotely.

The great thing about digital media is how one can communicate by posting without being limited for the most part. Consistent users of digital media can be updated as much as they please as well as can pace their speed of communication. The originality of the work has been converted to digital media as well. Work isn't as normal as it was when our parents would go to their day jobs and fill out all the tasks they had to accomplish manually, work is more digital, and work is more dependent on the benefits that digital media has to offer. Digital media also offers several learning opportunities which is what aligns the topic of digital media and digital literacy. Everyone has access to the internet as well as they have access to the media. Courses and valuable lessons are now offered virtually as well as advances referring to communication. Digital media and digital literacy overall enable unlimited access to the media in many ways that we may or may not need. It all helps traditional and new media evolve.
